I recently came across a video on YouTube that really irritated me. It was a clip caught by a traffic cam, where a young 2 year old girl in China, gets hit by a truck and is literally crushed. The truck commits a hit and run, and the toddler is left dying on the street pleading for help. Minutes and hours pass by and no one helps her. As I watched every single person pass by, I felt hurt and disgusted at how some people are so heartless in the world. Finally, after EIGHTEEN people pass by, it was a homeless lady who finally came to her help, but by then she is already unconscious and unresponsive.
Yueyue, the 2 year old girl, is currently in critical condition and brain dead. My sympathies go out to the parents who are deciding whether or not they should stop her suffering and let her die. Here is the video (the incident happens at 1:06; the video is really graphic and not for the faint of heart):
Watching this video made me feel disgusted of how some people in this world could care less about other people, especially a dying 2 year old girl. The excuses of many of the passerbys were that "they didn't see her" or "they were scared." In China, some people are scared that if they help someone injured, they have a chance of getting sued, even if they didn't do anything wrong (as was the case 5 years ago, when a woman broke her hip and sued the man who tried to help her). Here is the full article on the reasons why these witnesses didn't help: Ignored toddler doesn’t tell the whole story about China
Given these reasons, even though if these witnesses were scared of being sued (by the parents), they could have at least called an ambulance or kept an eye on the girl. I mean, it's an innocent little baby crying for help! I personally wouldn't have cared about the consequences, I would've ran to the child and helped her anyway I could.
I honestly am enraged at how some people in our world are so heartless! I am a very proud Chinese, but watching this video and the behaviors of these Chinese citizens has shamed me and disappointed me. It frustrates and at the same time depresses me. I just hope you know that not all Chinese are like this.
